Firewalls

Firewalls -

A firewall is a critical element of an organisation's information security systems. Its main purpose is to make sure that only the right people can get into, or out of, any computer network. Strong network security is a key requirement for any business as it helps to prevent unauthorised access to critical information. Linux is an excellent choice for any firewall requirements, thanks to its stability, flexibility and proven security.

Exactly how any firewall is configured and what rules must be in place for allowing and denying network access depend entirely on the project being considered. It could be a public-facing web application, an off-site backup facility or an email server for an office. They all benefit from a well designed and well implemented firewall.

One example where Tiger Computing has designed a bespoke firewall is for a college, where students are permitted access to the Internet only at certain times. A web-based interface was created that allows lecturers to control Internet access on a per-classroom basis, with all classrooms being granted access outside of college hours. This particular firewall also scans all Internet content and blocks access to anything deemed unsuitable.
