But beyond those classics lie other, more insidious culprits. Until one day, your HPC environment starts wheezing like a 90s modem, and nobody’s quite sure why.

1. Polling Madness: The CPU Drain You Invited In
It starts innocently enough. A message queue here, a cron job there. Before long, you’ve got a horde of well-meaning processes tapping the system on the shoulder every millisecond asking: “Anything yet? How about now? Still nothing? I’ll check again in 0.0001s.”
Excessive polling is the quiet assassin of CPU performance. It rarely shows up waving a red flag; just a slow, persistent siphoning of resources, like leaving a tap dripping. Event-driven models and smarter scheduling can help. Or at least make the polling intervals less… enthusiastic.
2. I/O Bottlenecks Masquerading as “Just a Bit of Lag”
If you’ve ever shouted at a seemingly idle system “But you’re not doing anything!” only to discover that the real villain is your storage layer, you’re not alone.
External storage that isn’t optimised for your specific workloads is like funnelling from three lanes into one on the motorway. And it doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. Sometimes it’s a few seconds of delay during backups, sometimes it’s a night job that mysteriously takes until breakfast.
Think of your I/O path as a motorway: no matter how fast your car (CPU), if the road’s jammed, you’re not getting anywhere quickly.
3. Database Déjà Vu
There’s nothing quite like watching your most critical database hobble along on outdated configs, bogged down by years of neglect and poor indexing.
Over-utilised, unindexed, or just plain elderly databases can strangle performance site-wide. And yet, because the server load looks fine, and the logs aren’t screaming, they often go unnoticed. Until someone updates the product catalogue and the site starts loading like it’s 2004.
Tip: databases don’t age like fine wine. Keep them lean, tuned, and thoroughly indexed.

You think you killed them. You know you killed them. But there they are – zombie processes, hanging around your process table like ghosts at a séance, contributing absolutely nothing except a mild sense of dread.
While zombies themselves don’t consume resources, they often signal deeper issues with parent-child process handling and their relatives; defunct or orphaned processes. These can start to pile up, especially in long-running HPC environments.
If your system feels haunted, it might be time for an exorcism via ps aux | grep defunct.
